Surrealism final outcome

These six images were made using a set of rules. I selected an animal, within the collage there had to be; a habitat it wouldn't live in, a person with some kind of association to it, a diagram and some kind of surface pattern.

CMYK

This is a CMYK print I produced in my screen printing workshops a few weeks ago. Its from a photo I took in New York. I was pleased with the print itself but the scanner doesn't do it justice, it just looks like a badly edited photo...!

The uses of solitude

This is an illustration for the book "The Uses Of Solitude" by Anthony Storr. The first image relates to a part of the essay that talks about the way people deal with the death of a loved one. The British, with their culture of the 'stiff upper lip' applaud people for carrying on with their daily lives through times of grief which leads to pent up anxiety and an inability to face their real emotions. The second image illustrates a case study of a scientist who was manning a weather base in the Antarctic and insisted on doing so alone in an attempt to find pure solitude.

They are painted in acrylic on Fabriano paper, i reckon the first image would make a good screen print.

Screen Print and Foil Blocking

Some work I did in the first couple of weeks of our screen print workshops. The photographs don't do justice to the copper foil but use your imagination, its shiny.

The Portrait People Quilt

Here is my summer project, sorry its taken me so long to put it up on the blogger. Its concept is pretty self explanatory, it took me ages and I'm not ashamed to say that I love it a little bit.

Surrealism Part Three

These were a visual response to another set of words as 'metaphors'. I think I was possibly a little too literal with them. We were also limited to black and white and one colour.

Ominous

Melancholy

Omission

Meticulous

Surrealism Part Two

This was the outcome of our second workshop to respond to a set of words in a surreal way.

A very unusual tree

Ghost rabbit

Momento mori (A reminder of death)

Surrealism Part One

These two images were made during the first static work workshop following a set of rules given by our tutor. They were totally unplanned but still seem to look very considered, if a bit contrived.

Lotions and Potions

This project is based on a book I found from the 1950s with recipes for making your own beauty products. I designed two sets of labels for old medicine bottles for the products, one set in watercolour and the other done with lino print.
I also made this poster to advertise the products, replicating the style of advertising in the 50s, I'm going to screen print this one next time I get into the workshop.

New York

I went to New York, it seems like an age ago but here are a few piccies off my trusty canon FT.

Native American Magic (final outcome)

The project took a bit of a turn at the end, i decided to use desert images for the background as apposed to the hubble space photos. I printed on really creamy paper stock which made the whole piece look really brown and rusty. I'm going to screen print one of the images as a 4 colour CMYK print which is something I've always wanted to try. The symbols within the patterns represent the transition from man to bear and their spiritual connection.
